What makes an image, a performance or an object offensive? The roundtable engages in this question that forms the subject of the volume “Taking Offense,” which was published by Christiane Kruse, Birgit Meyer and Anne-Marie Korte with Wilhelm Fink and E.J. Brill this year.
In pluralistic societies around the world images continue to trigger heated controversies. The essays in the book explore these tensions and conflicts in various contexts, in and beyond Europe and from a range of disciplinary perspectives. The studies brought together focus on images that are perceived as insulting or offensive; those subject to taboos and restrictions; or those that are condemned as blasphemous. How is the relation between regimes of visibility in art, journalism, politics and religion negotiated in plural settings?
The roundtable is organized by the professorship of Global Art History and will be moderated by Prof. Monica Juneja. The discussants are Dr. Anna Andreeva (Heidelberg), Prof. Ute Hüsken (Heidelberg), Prof. Dr. Birgit Meyer (Utrecht), Prof. Dr. Jojada Verrips (Amsterdam). Thus, the roundtable brings together three contributors to the book and two scholars from Heidelberg to think further on the books’s questions and related topics.
