From June 21-22, 2017, several Cluster members will participate in the symposium “OUT OF SPACE? Erratic, ephemeral & emerging cultural practices in illegal, illegitimate or intangible locations” in Copenhagen. It is organized by the Chair of Visual and Media Anthropology at the Heidelberg Center for Transcultural Studies (HCTS) and the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies at Copenhagen University. The symposium will address questions such as “What locations allow for the emergence of new - often erratic - cultural practices? And vice versa: how and when do cultural practices constitute locations, and how do we make sense of this if such creative topographies are deemed as sites of illegitimacy by some? How can we pay adequate attention to such "queer" spaces and shape conceptual and methodological sensoria that register vernacular, demotic or peripheral fabrics of urbanism?” Referring to Aby Warburg’s concept of “Denkräume” (‘think-spaces’), the conference brings together Media Anthropology, Sensory Ethnography and Sound Studies. It aims at exploring new sensory, visual and gustatory practices in urban spaces, by using not only “classic” papers, but also more experimental paper and presentation formats. Those include, inter alia, audio or performative contributions and add a new way of exploring modern sensory, visual and gustatory practices in urban spaces. Researchers from a wide range of disciplines and regional expertise will broaden the realm of art activism, aesthetics and their relevance for vernacular space-making. They will further explore contemporary border regimes on fringes, frontiers and nodal points of societies. Contributors from Heidelberg will present their topics, using the aforementioned experimental paper formats. Dr. Cathrine Bublatzky will talk about “Iran: Generation Post-Revolution – a photo-essay”, and Marlène Harles will present “Artist-led initiatives in Nepal: the visual archive as alternative”. The symposium “OUT OF SPACE?” is organized by Prof. Christiane Brosius and the Forum Urban Spaces (Heidelberg) and Prof. Holger Schulze (Sound Studies Lab). It will take place at the South Campus, auditorium 21.0.54 ("Multisalen") at the Department of Arts and Cultural Studies, Copenhagen University. For more information about the symposium visit the event page. Christiane Brosius is Chair of Visual and Media Anthropology at the Cluster “Asia and Europe” and the Heidelberg Center for Transcultural Studies (HCTS). Cathrine Bublatzky is Assistant Professor to the Chair of Visual and Media Anthropology at the HCTS. Marlène Harles is Ph.D. Candidate at the Graduate Programme for Transcultural Studies and member of project B20 “Rethinking Art”.
