Her talk charts the digital media practices of young urban Indians in order to analyze new mediatic forms of nationalism that have emerged with the rapid expansion of social media. Taking up online abuse as a particular case of diverse digital cultures proliferating in India, the presentation lays out an argument on 'gendered nationalism' in the digital age. How does this ethnographic work speak to broader scholarship on political cultures of digital media and religion? Some provisional answers will be offered, emphasizing simultaneously the need for comprehensive research on digital media politics in India and among the Indian diaspora in Europe. Dr. Sahana Udupa is an anthropologist and communications scholar with research interests in digital media, news cultures, globalization, urbanization, media policy, transnational religious politics, and South Asia. She is Associate Professor at the Central European University in Budapest as well as a Senior Research Partner at the Max Planck Institute for the Study of Religious and Ethnic Diversity in Goettingen. In 2016, Sahana Udupa received the European Research Council Starting Grant Award for her study "Faith Online". This award is designed to encourage young talented research leaders to gain independence in Europe and to build their own careers. The talk will take place on Monday, October 24, 2016 at 11 a.m. in room 212 at the Karl Jaspers Centre for Transcultural Studies.
