The interactive lecture series "Recalibrating Culture – Reenvisioning the (Trans-)Cultural – C’est quoi la (trans-)culture?" introduces key players from various disciplines and fields engages in re-envisioning a new phenomenology of (trans-)culture from different angles. Its goal is to reconsider the (trans-)cultural in response to post-culturalist, neo-naturalist, neo-materialist, post-humanist, techno-scientist, and other such approaches, all of which offer new perspectives on anthropocentrism, with regard to what only appears as a self-evident binary: culture and nature.

In the course of the series, PD Dr. Burkhard Liebsch from the Research Institute for Philosophy Hannover will talk about “Das Vorkulturelle, das Transkulturelle und die identitäre Versuchung” on Thursday, October 18, at 6 pm. Liebsch looks at the pre-cultural, the transcultural and the temptation of identity. The lecture will be in German.

Upcoming lectures will be given by, amongst others, Gisèle Sapiro (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, EHESS), Claire Farago (University of Colorado Boulder) and Donald Preziosi (University of California), Jacques Revel (École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, EHESS), and Friedrich Balke (Ruhr Universität Bochum).

The lecture series will culminate in a three day workshop on November 22–24, 2018. The aim of the workshop is to bring together these well-established senior scholars with young and emerging academics, thus fostering a creative as well as antagonistic dialogue between past and future key players from various disciplines and fields.

Since this is an interactive series, it provides unconventional formats and requires preparation from its participants. Readings for each of the talks are available on HeiBox: https://heibox.uni-heidelberg.de/d/f247ad0054/. The goal is to practice reading-in-conjunction: should participants have materials from their own area of specialization or expertise, they are welcome to bring them to the discussion.
