Prof. Nikolas Jaspert first welcomed the new HCTS fellows. Dr. Natalia Bachour joined the HCTS with her project "The human body as remedy out of a historico-cultural and medical perspective: Studies about the knowledge transfer in the Arabian medicine of Middle Ages and modern times". With a project on "The Stone Sutra Project of the Cloud Dwelling Monastery during the Jin Dynasty (1115-1234)", Dr. Hui-Ping Chuang also joined the HCTS as an associated fellow until 2020.
Prof. Jaspert then gave an update on the latest awards, grants and appointment for members of the Cluster and HCTS, the latest of which is the prestigious Opus Magnum grant that Prof. Barbara Mittler received by Volkswagen Stiftung for the research project and seminar series "No Parallel? The Fatherly Bodies of Gandhi and Mao". Also, the German Research Foundation (DFG) appointed PD Dr. Kerstin von Lingen, associate member of the HCTS, as a Heisenberg Fellow with her project "Consumer Boycott as Female Ethics, 1800-1990."
In 2019 and 2020, the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) will fund two doctoral scholarships each year. The grants provide young foreign scholars with an opportunity to carry out research and continue their higher education at the HCTS, said Prof. Jaspert.
Prof. Jaspert also mentioned the latest monographs, edited volumes and articles published by members and former members of the HCTS and reported on the decision for a new Maria Sibylla Merian Centre at Beida (China), which will then be an official partner to Heidelberg University.
Dr. Björn-Ole Kamm (Kyoto University) then introduced the now established Joint Degree Master in Transcultural Studies (JDTS) Programme with Kyoto University's Graduate School of Letters and the HCTS. Prof. Jaspert also thanked Liaison and Event Manager Sabine Jung, who will leave the HCTS in September.
Prof. Christiane Brosius, the professor for Visual and Media Anthropology at the HCTS, gave a presentation on her new project "Nepal Heritage Documentation Project," which was awarded a grant of €775,000 by the British ARCADIA foundation. Over a test period of two years, 400 temples, monasteries, and other building types will be documented and inventoried.
With the beginning of the winter semester Prof. Monica Juneja will be taking over the acting directorship.
