On Thursday, July 12, Dr. Christopher Gerteis, historian from the SOAS University of London and HCTS visiting professor with the Professorship of Cultural Economic History, will give a lecture about "Motorboats and Morals Education: Philanthropy, Education and the Cold War in Japan." This talk focuses on how Sasakawa Ryōichi used his philanthropic gambling empire to reshape the social conscience of young people and to promote the re-introduction of morals education for Japanese youth. The event will take place at the Karl Jaspers Centre starting 6 pm and is organized by the Professorship of Cultural Economic History.
