Former Cluster member Dr. Steven Ivings realized a field trip to Hakadote, which aimed at researching the trade, foreign consuls and merchants of the then "treaty port" in the second half of the 19th century. In addition, two students from the M.A. Transcultural Studies at the HCTS, Rashaad Eschack and Datong Qiu, traveled with Ivings to conduct research for their M.A. thesis on that subject. Both students are currently on exchange with Kyoto University where Steven Ivings now works as a lecturer in Economic History at the Graduate School of Economics.
