Acting Director Prof. Barbara Mittler headed the meeting and welcomed the members of the Cluster and HCTS. She first gave an update on the latest publications, awards, grants and appointments. New members at the HCTS introduced themselves: Karin Zitzewitz is Humbold Fellow at the Heidelberg Center for Transcultural Studies, Elena Bernardini is a Guest Lecturer for the winter semester, Michael Brown has taken up work on this project in the Transcultural Forays, Lorenzo Andofatto joined Prof. Kurtz HERA project, Josef Ciaudo is Junior Fellow at the Cluster with a Chiang-Ching Kuo Foundation Scholarship and Takahiro Yamamoto took up the Assistant Professorship in Cutural Economic History. Prof. Mittler welcomed these new members as well as new graduate students in GPTS-9 and the new master students in the M.A. Transcultural Studies, who have taken up their research and studies at the Cluster with the start of the winter semester. She then illustrated how far the history of the Cluster “Asia and Europe” goes back and how difficult it had been at times - from the Cluster’s first beginnings in 2005 to the establishment of the Heidelberg Center for Transcultural Studies in 2013. Here, she stressed in particular, the efforts of former Cluster Directors Prof. Joseph Maran and Prof. Axel Michaels who had sowed the seeds for the Cluster from the very beginning. She thanked them for their service as Directors. With the beginning of the winter semester the new directorate, consisting of Prof. Barbara Mittler, Prof. Monica Juneja and Prof. Nikolas Jaspert has taken up its responsibilities. The next General Meeting will take place on February 8, 2018.
